For parents' councils
Making the way to school safer as a parents' council
Parents are often the first to notice where the way to school is dangerous. As a parents' council you can put the topic on the table and get a survey started that includes every family and gives the municipality reliable figures.
Your role
The school runs the survey: it sets it up, hands out the parent letters and is responsible for the data. The parents' council gets things started, encourages parents to take part and brings the results into the talks with the school and the municipality. That keeps responsibilities clear, and the school has support.
Start: raise the topic at your meeting and with the head teacher
Support: announce, remind, answer questions
Follow up: discuss the results with the school and the municipality
Arguments for the head teacher
Little effort
The setup takes about 10 minutes, and the school prints the parent letters itself. There is nothing to install.
Privacy built in
No names, no accounts and no tracking. The answers are encrypted, and only the school holds the key.
A basis for the route plan
The report and the GIS data help the municipality with the school route plan and the traffic inspection.
Every family has a say
Not just the loudest voices: every family can take part, including those who drive their child.
Try it first
In the demo the head teacher sees what the questionnaire, the analysis and the report look like.
Every year again
Each new first year is a chance to follow up, and parents can update their answers.
How to get it going
Discuss the topic at the parents' council meeting and decide to ask the school for a survey.
Suggest the survey to the head teacher, in person or by email.
Help announce the survey, present it at parents' evening and think of the reminder after two weeks.
Discuss the results together and approach the municipality with the school.
Who sees what
The parents' council does not see individual answers either: only the school can open them with its key. The school can share the report with the summarised results with the parents' council. That builds trust among the parents who take part.
What parents can rely on
- No names and no addresses
- Answers encrypted, only the school has the key
- Parents' texts only after the school approves them
Try it first
In the demo you play through a school route survey at the invented Sonnenwiese primary school in Musterstadt, from both sides. As a parent you draw a route to school and mark dangerous and good spots. As the school you open the analysis with the key sheet and see the answers of 60 sample families on the map, up to the finished report. So you know beforehand exactly what it means for the school and the parents. You get a personal access for 14 days on request by email. The demo is in German.
